SEO: How To Make Google Your Best Friend

Google. It has simplified term papers, phone books, and heated debates everywhere. In fact, the word Google is now used as a verb, not just a noun.

“I wonder where I can find a mechanic?” Google it.

“Do people like the new restaurant downtown?” Google it.

“When did Columbus sail the ocean blue?” Google it.

The big question every business owner wants to know is, “How can I be found on Google?”

Through a process called search engine optimization (SEO), you can make your website easier to find and be closer to the top of a Google search.

How it works

Search engines including Google use complicated algorithms which catalog information. They follow the algorithms and index keywords, videos, metadata, pictures, and every single word on your website. So when someone searches for something they are interested in, all the websites with relevant information will pop up in the search results.

Part of the function of a search engine is to rank websites. While every search engine has their own way of calculating the search results order, there are things you can do to move higher up on the list.

How to make Google work for you

Hundreds of factors play into how search engines sort their search results. While it is nearly impossible to optimize for every criteria in an algorithm, especially as the algorithms used by every search engine are closely guarded secrets, there are several tips to help your site be located closer to the top of the list.

When you are creating your website, keep five or six keywords that describe your business in mind and use them over and over throughout your site. Use these same key words in regularly updated content, whether that is a blog or some other form of content.

“Make pages primarily for users, not for search engines,” is one tip Google gives on their Search Console Help article. They encourage honesty in your web content and keeping your users the focus of your content. By participating in cloaking, link schemes, and other tricks, you are hurting your website in the long run.

Another way search engines categorize websites is by their popularity. Google sees popular sites as meeting the needs of visitors and is more likely to suggest it to searchers. For this reason, it is important to drive as many visitors to your site as you can. Whether it is by sharing a link on social media or other means, the more visitors you have visit your site, the higher the ranking.

Paid advertisements are another way to get your website to more people. Google AdWords is just one example of advertising on a search engine. The ad will show at the top of search results, after someone searches for your specified words. By writing your own ad and setting your budget, you have the capability to reach more people in a shorter amount of time. This is separate from SEO, but both can be used in conjunction as part of your marketing strategy.

Advertising on social media is an incredibly powerful tool in getting visitors to your site. According to Facebook, out of every five minutes people spend on their phones, at least one minute is spend on Facebook or Instagram. By advertising with either Facebook or Instagram, you can reach many of the two billion people using those apps.

There are several ways to advertise with Facebook. Ad campaigns are created with either a daily budget or a lifetime budget. Ads can be specifically targeting to a broad or narrow demographic of Facebook users based on how the user engages with social media. Ad campaigns include insights into how well your ads did in terms of clicks, likes, and views.

If you aren’t quite ready for a full ad campaign, you can boost a single post to a wider audience just once. Pay a little money and let Facebook go to work getting your post to your ideal customer. Visit this link to learn more.

LinkedIn is an excellent platform to advertise with if you are looking to make business connections, generate leads for your own business, or attract an audience of professionals. According to LinkedIn, four out of five users are decision makers of their respective businesses. LinkedIn boasts that they have twice the buying power of other social networks.

LinkedIn uses a similar system of advertising to get your ads to the right clients based on business type and market. Ads can be sent directly to LinkedIn mailboxes, can be shown in home feeds as sponsored content, and can be used to generate leads for future customers. Visit this link to learn more.
